Governance: What We Believe

Governance is not a checklist to complete or a credential to earn. It is a disciplined practice of stewardship, judgment, and moral clarity. Effective boards do more than comply with standards—they cultivate trust, ask courageous questions, safeguard mission, and create the conditions in which schools can thrive across generations.

Governance is most powerful when it is thoughtful rather than performative, developmental rather than transactional, and rooted in the lived realities of school leadership. In a time of complexity and disruption, schools deserve governance learning that strengthens discernment, deepens community, and helps leaders move from reaction toward direction.

What Does Research Say About Boards?

Research insights on governance (icaisa, 2024)

Fundamentals Matter

An analysis of 490 governance-related recommendations appearing in school accreditation reports showed that board fundamentals (what we call governance foundations) are by far the most-cited accreditation recommendations at 53% of all recommendations.

Strategy and the Future

Of the Strategic recommendations, a majority of them (62%) referenced some aspect of the the school's strategy, followed by the need for regular conversations centered on the future of the school.

Cash is King

Most of the recommendations (38%) concerned the Board’s role and responsibility with respect to financial stability, frequently intersecting with enrollment factors and giving (fundraising).

Too Many Meetings

For every three Boards, one has regularly scheduled Board meetings 8-10+ times per year, with 5-7 times being the most typical (53%). Frequency of meeting is a false (but comfortable) proxy for productivity.

Be Prepared. Always.

Any school, regardless of its age, tenure of the head, board composition, etc. may experience a governance-related challenge. Good governance practices are as important to larger, older, and more established schools as they are to smaller, younger, and less established schools.

New Trustee Institute

Strong boards aren't built in a single orientation — they're formed over time. The New Trustee Institute is a year-long, cohort-based formation in the work of independent school governance. Across eight sessions, new trustees develop the fluency to read the room, ask better questions, and contribute with confidence from their first Board meeting. November includes an in-person Forum with trustee coaching.
