Full-time Assistant Librarian position

SY 2019-2020


Saint Peter's Prep invites applications for a full-time Assistant Librarian.


Preference for this position will be given to applicants who hold a degree in Library or Information Science, or are in the process of attaining one. Previous experience in a library and/or high school setting a plus.


Founded in 1872, Saint Peter’s Prep is a Catholic, Jesuit high school of approximately 950 boys in downtown Jersey City, NJ, with a highly diverse population. In recent years we have completed a number of renovation and construction projects, including O’Keefe Commons (2011), Moriarty Science Center (2011), and Perkins Athletic Center (2016), Hogan Hall (2017), and Mulry Hall (2018).

Performance Responsibilities

  • Promote and encourage reading and information literacy skills through reading initiatives, book clubs, and themed book displays.

  • Encourage the use of educational technology and digital tools to enhance student learning.

  • Serve as an advocate for the school's library programs and services by utilizing a variety of communication and technology tools, including the use of social media.

  • Work with head librarian to create and facilitate engaging research lessons.

  • Monitor student behavior and maintain an environment that is conducive to student learning.

  • Perform daily library tasks, including shelving  in accordance with Library of Congress classification system, shelf-reading, and basic circulation duties.

  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff and participate in professional development and school programming.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Librarian.


Qualifications

  • Experience working with teenagers.

  • Interest in library technology and in library makerspaces.

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Ability to lift 40lbs.

  • Familiarity with social media platforms.


Desired Qualifications

  • Degree in education or a STEM field a plus.

  • Work towards a MI, MLIS, or MLS degree a plus.
