The Elisabeth Morrow School is looking for a Controller to begin work on April 1, 2019. This position is an integral part of the school’s financial and business operations and is a full time 12-month position with a generous benefit plan.

Position Summary

Reports to the Director of Finance and will be responsible for providing oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities. The Controller will oversee the day-to-day finance operations of a budget of approximately $15 million and have functional responsibility over accounting and general ledger, accounts payable, student billing, and payroll.  

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, implement and maintain procedures and policies to ensure an efficient and effective accounting operation. Manage compliance with existing and evolving IRS regulations as well as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

  • Manage the General Ledger accounting system, ensuring a timely month end close and all appropriate general ledger accounts are properly analyzed and reconciled.

  • Prepare fiscal year-end financial statements in accordance with all accounting rules and regulations and oversee the audit process, working closely with the school’s independent auditing firm, including preparation of audit worksheets and files at the request of the auditors.

  • Assist the Director of Finance in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budgets and forecasts. Generate monthly budget reports and communicate with key budget managers. Facilitate a timely monthly close, review and prepare financial reports ensuring budget variances are properly investigated.

  • Work closely with the Director of Auxiliary Programs to analyze revenue and expenses for each program and develop and prepare profit and loss reports.

  • Prepare interim financial statements and reports at the request of the Director of Finance for the Finance, Building and Grounds and Investment committees of the board of trustees.

  • Oversee the day to day business office functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivables, student billing and payroll.

  • Oversee the accounts payable function. This includes, but is not limited to, weekly review of invoices, payment processing, approval process, budgetary controls, vendor relationships, compliance with federal and state regulations governing payments to vendors (Forms W-9 and 1099) and monthly reconciliation to the general ledger.

  • Oversee and review the school-wide purchase and credit card program.

  • Analyze and reconcile investment accounts on a quarterly basis and ensure all investment income, realized and unrealized gains and losses are accounted for properly.

  • Oversee and analyze the endowment portfolio on a quarterly basis to ensure all endowment funds are properly accounted for and donor restrictions are adhered to.

  • Analyze, reconcile and record all development transactions for pledges, contributions and other types of giving on a monthly basis to the general ledger.

  • Oversee cash management including the analysis and accounting for cash activity, monthly bank reconciliations and cash flow projections

  • Special projects as assigned by the Director of Finance

 

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited institution, CPA strongly preferred

  • Substantial experience in non-profit accounting. Independent school experience is a plus.

  • Strong analytical & computation skills and high proficiency with technology including Excel, Word and other accounting and educational software programs.

  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge (and/or similar not-for-profit accounting applications) strongly preferred

  • Ability to communicate, solve problems, and work effectively in a service-oriented manner with all members of the school community.

  • Strong written and oral communication, customer service, and organizational skills.
