This session is for Board of Trustee members in their first or second year of service on the Board, or for those who want a reminder of the principles of good governance. You will be presented with an overview of the basic concepts and complexities of independent school governance. Case studies provide an interactive session.

Program Fee:

Douglas J. Lyons recently retired from his position of Executive Director of the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS-CT) where he had been since July 2004. He is now consulting for ECIS and with many schools and associations on issues of governance, strategic thinking, school sustainability, and other areas. A graduate of Villanova University, Doug holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He began his career in public education, serving for 20 years in the New Jersey public schools as a teacher, coach, school principal, and Superintendent of Schools. In 1992, he left the Superintendency in Mountain Lakes, N.J., to accept the position of Headmaster of the Greenwich Country Day School, Connecticut’s largest independent school. Dr. Lyons’ publications on education and on parenting have appeared in local, state, and national journals, and in the popular media, including The New York Times. Doug has served on many non-profit Boards and committees, among them the Boards of the St. Angela’s School in the South Bronx, N.Y.; the Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, PA; the United Way; YMCA; and The Community Answers Service Organization in Greenwich, CT. Doug served for many years on the Calvary Church vestry and as Chair of the town Planning and Zoning Commission, both in Stonington Ct. he is currently a Trustee and Chair of the Governance Committee of the NNSP, the National Network of Schools in Partnership.

Carole Everett became the Executive Director of the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools (NJAIS) in July 2010. Her prior career in independent schools included teaching Latin, music, and public speaking, serving as the Director of College Counseling, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, Diversity Coordinator, Director of Development, Assistant Head for External Affairs, and Head of School. She also worked in college admissions at Barnard and was the Director of Admissions at The Juilliard School, overseeing college and graduate school admissions for dance, drama, and music. Schools she has served include Birch Wathen, Calhoun, Nightingale-Bamford, St. Luke’s in Greenwich Village, and the Good Hope School in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. As an international educator, Mrs. Everett co-founded and was the Co-Director for 17 years of the Spoleto Arts Symposia, a series of summer workshops in Spoleto, Italy, that included an opera master class, writing program, cooking school, jazz program, and kids camp. Simon and Schuster/Arco published her first book, The Performing Art Major’s College Guide, that went to three editions and was published in several languages, and Random House published the next version, The Guide to Performing Arts Programs. She serves on the Board of Trustees for The Episcopal New Yorker, CSEE, ICAISA, and the Advisory Board for Noodle.com. Prior Board experience includes serving the Greenwich Philharmonic Orchestra, and as Vice-President on the Spoleto Arts Symposia Board. Carole Everett earned her bachelor’s degree cum laude from Barnard College of Columbia University, and holds an advanced degree from the Universita di Siena, Italy. She also studied at Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music. A mezzo-soprano, Carole Everett performed with opera companies and orchestras, and on recital tours around the world. Ms. Everett is a native of Wellesley, Massachusetts, and lives in New York City with her husband, son, and goldendoodle puppy.

Cancellation Policy:

Registration fees will only be refunded if NJAIS is notified of your cancellation two weeks prior to the program. You may transfer your registration to a colleague in your school at no cost.
