Mindfulness and Attention:

Rutgers Preparatory School

9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
“Can I have your attention?” “Eyes up here, please.” “Are you listening?”
As teachers, we spend much of our days asking students to pay attention. But very seldom if ever do we teach them how to do that. And in an age of ever-increasing stimuli and interruptions, or is only becoming a greater challenge (for students and for adults) to cultivate or capacity for sustained attention.
Jon Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as the “awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally.” This simple--though not easy!--act of noticing the present moment, when practiced over time, helps us to have some choice in where we place our attention. In other words, with practice, we can actually learn to, and teach others to, pay attention.
This workshop will explore both the science of attention and distraction--how attention works and why distraction is to be expected--and practices that can help us to see how our own attention works. Because mindfulness is best learned experientially, participants can expect to try several mindfulness and meditation practices over the course of the day.
No prior experience is necessary. Also, return participants last year's mindfulness world are welcome; the content will be different.
