Grit and Grace: An Institute for Female Leaders in Education
For: Women who are current school administrators and women who aspire to move into school leadership roles and have a minimum of 3-5 years professional experience
This institute serves to promote personal and professional growth for current and aspiring female school leaders. The program will be reflective, collaborative, and connective, leveraging the strengths of each member of the cohort. With facilitation by veteran school leaders, consultants, and other women in leadership, we will navigate topics that challenge women on a path to leadership roles in schools. This five-part series will include:
Block 1: Unpacking Gender Bias in Educational Leadership: From Identification to Analysis to Change

This morning workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Jennie Weiner of the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. The purpose of this interactive session is to bring focus and voice to the special and unique experiences of women in educational leadership, challenge institutional bias, network with women leaders across New Jersey, learn skills and strategies to enhance your effectiveness as a female leader, and empower and enlighten others around these issues. In particular, we will spend time discussing how current ways of understanding school leadership can serve to put women in a "double bind" with real consequences to our feelings of efficacy and success in the role. We will also discuss some strategies to address these issues while celebrating and maintaining our authentic selves and preferred leadership approach. Following Dr. Weiner’s seminar, we will meet with a panel of current school leaders who will share their experiences as women in educational leadership. This will be a reflective day to build cohesion as a cohort and set goals for the program.
Block 2: The Inkblot

This session will focus on giving and receiving feedback. How can we utilize the “area for growth” rather than let it be the sole inkblot that stains an entire jar full of strengths? Additionally, we will work to give feedback in a constructive and productive manner, without skirting issues that need to be addressed. Facilitators Jen Cort, LCSW-C, and Brooke Carroll will lead the group to build our confidence in the area of feedback and negotiation through topics such as: listening for meaning, avoiding verbal overcrowding (filling space with words when anxious), making the ask, delegation, and culture creation.
Block 3: I Don’t Know How She Does It
Friday, February 1, 2019 (Snow Date: Friday, February 8, 2019)
Work-life balance can seem like an impossible circus act, and yet, it is the key factor in successful leadership. This block will examine the work-life balance and provide strategies to support women navigate the many demands of ambition, family, and personal time.
Block 4: Shadowing Experience
Before April 4, 2019
Seeing leaders in action is often the best learning experience. This block will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time to shadow a current female school leader.
Block 5: Dinner
Thursday, April 4, 2019
This final block will be a reflective experience over dinner to conclude the cohort experience.
