Founded in 1861, The Pingry School is an independent, co-educational, college preparatory day school for 1,100 students in kindergarten through the twelfth grade, situated on two campuses in Basking Ridge and Short Hills, New Jersey.
The Pingry School seeks a perceptive and compassionate Upper School Counselor to join a diverse school community. The ideal candidate authentically embraces the intrinsic value of the individual. This behavioral health specialist is committed to the social, emotional, and intellectual development of students and is skilled at creating individual support plans and appropriate school-level programs. A collaborator with a deep appreciation for the variety of challenges students face, this person proactively interacts with students across a variety of situations and settings and uses a variety of strategies to engage with them. With consistently high standards and welcoming of partnership with families and faculty, the candidate of choice properly observes student privacy and confidentiality, conveying appropriately to multiple audiences the limits of confidentiality (as determined by applicable law and school needs). The school counselor assumes an active role on student support teams, demonstrating follow through and personal responsibility for student cases.
The behavioral health professional at The Pingry School will be current in clinical knowledge and practice, seeking growth and learning every day and inspiring others to do the same. Through their optimism, selflessness, flexibility, and teamwork, the selected candidate has a real desire to support the wellbeing of students and the school community and to contribute their passions through additional efforts, such as advising clubs or supervising activities.
Required qualifications include a master’s degree, professional credentials in the field (e.g., social work, psychology, counseling, etc.), expertise in adolescent social, emotional, and intellectual development, skill in consultation and collaboration in school settings, and knowledge about current laws, professional practice, and ethics in field of behavioral health. In addition to honor and character, commitment to intellectual engagement, and appreciation for stewardship and sustainability, especially important is the candidate’s ease with diverse constituencies and demonstrated commitment to an inclusive school community.
