Arts Education as Beneficial for Non-Arts Learning: How, When, What, and Why? Featuring Tricia Tunstall, Kent Place School Alumna

Date: Tuesday - February 06, 2018
Time: 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM
Location: Kent Place School

The education world is increasingly waking up to a truth long known by arts teachers: arts education has the power to bolster and accelerate all kinds of non-arts learning, including academic performance, social-emotional growth, and executive functioning. But the question remains: What kinds of arts learning really pack this kind of punch? One compelling answer to that question is provided by "El Sistema," the unique experiment in intensive ensemble music education for underserved kids that began in Venezuela 42 years ago and has become a global phenomenon. As the Sistema model is adapted to successfully address a wide variety of youth and children's needs around the world, it's increasingly clear that arts educators, and indeed all educators, have much to learn from this model.
